Recognizing and Overcoming Spiritual Battles
As believers, we have an enemy who seeks to throw off our walk with God. Often, he doesn’t do it in obvious ways. Instead, he attacks subtly, chipping away at our spiritual strength and distracting us from our purpose. When you sense something is off, it’s worth paying attention to these common signs of spiritual warfare:
- Loss of Spiritual Desire – A sudden loss of interest in prayer, Scripture, and spiritual pursuits is often the first sign. When we start moving toward God’s purpose, the enemy’s goal is to drain our spiritual passion, leaving us dry and directionless.
- Physical Fatigue – The enemy sometimes works through physical exhaustion, making everyday tasks feel heavier. When you’re physically worn down, it’s easier to feel spiritually defeated.
- Feeling Overwhelmed and Confused – Your ability to focus and make decisions gets affected. Confusion and feeling overwhelmed can sometimes lead us to question our faith and purpose.
- Unusual Pressure – The challenges of life’s pressures feel beyond the norm. Whether it’s related to work, family, or finances, these difficulties can serve as a distraction.
- Strained Relationships – The enemy loves to create division. When conflicts seem to erupt out of nowhere with friends or family, it may be an attempt to isolate you from those who provide spiritual support.
- Not Feeling Like Yourself – When you’re under spiritual attack, you may feel more irritable, negative, or anxious. This oppression often creeps in through habits, distractions, and mindsets that subtly pull us away from God’s peace.
As believers, we cannot be possessed by Satan, but we can be oppressed, and the enemy will try to exert influence. However, as believers, our choices can invite oppression through habitual sin. When we let these things take precedence, they leave an opening for the enemy to weaken us spiritually.
PREPARING FOR BATTLE
Satan targets those who pose a threat to his kingdom. That’s why being prepared for spiritual warfare, knowing how to recognize it, and understanding how to fight it are essential tools. Most of us, however, aren’t on guard. We don’t always sense the attack right away, and we often rely on our own strength instead of using the powerful tools God has given us.
How then do we prepare for spiritual battle? It starts with God’s Word. In Ephesians 6:11-18 God encourages us to put on the full armor of God.
11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers.
This spiritual armor includes faith, salvation, and prayer, all of which strengthen us to face attacks. Most of the armor is defensive, but we do have one offensive weapon—the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
By consistently spending time in God’s Word, we equip ourselves with the truth needed to combat lies, discouragement and attacks from the enemy. The Bible encourages us to pray on every occasion, even when we feel distant from God, as this too reinforces our spiritual defenses.
Whenever I’m planning to take a faith adventure, I prepare myself for the attacks that inevitably follow. This doesn’t just happen on the trip; it begins well before. Satan will plant seeds of doubt, giving me multiple reasons to reconsider. That’s his ultimate goal. If he can keep us off the field, he gains the advantage.
RECOGNIZING DARKNESS IN THE WORLD
In places where Christianity is sparse, the darkness can feel overwhelming. When missionaries share stories of such areas, they often speak of the tangible spiritual heaviness that permeates the atmosphere. There is a distinct difference in places with little to no Christian influence—a lack of joy, a hopelessness, and often, a stronghold of oppression.
When we bring God’s light into these areas, even the smallest amount shines brighter. It’s why the enemy fights so hard to keep us from these places—because that light disrupts his work. He is cunning, relentless, and will use every tool at his disposal to keep us from stepping out. But we serve a God who is greater, and His light cannot be extinguished.
FIGHTING WITH GOD’S STRENGTH
The enemy can feel overwhelming at times, but Scripture reminds us that when we put our trust in God, the devil will flee (James 4:7). When we rely on the tools God provides, we are stronger than any attack the enemy can launch. He cannot stand against a believer who is armed with truth and humility, fully dependent on God. Part of our job is to manage ourselves in a way that Satan will want to flee from us.
Humbling ourselves before God is key. The world encourages self-reliance, but when we submit to God’s strength, we stand firm against attacks. Humility doesn’t mean weakness; it’s our acknowledgment that, through Christ, we are made strong.
HOLDING ON TO VICTORY
Ultimately, God is victorious. When we stand firm, prepared, and grounded in Him, we participate in that victory. Spiritual warfare may be intense, but we don’t face it alone. Our role is to stay close to God, rely on His strength, and remember that He has already won.
If you find yourself in a season of spiritual warfare, hold on. God has chosen you, equipped you, and will strengthen you to stand. Serving Him is a powerful privilege—and while it may come with challenges, it also comes with the assurance that He will prevail.
ACTION STEPS
If you’re currently feeling under attack (or the next time you are under spiritual attack), following these steps will help strengthen your faith:
- Pray for God’s protection and ask others to join you in prayer.
- Focus on Scripture and arm yourself with verses that remind you of God’s strength.
- Practice Discernment – stay alert for signs of warfare, if you feel resistance pause and seek God’s wisdom and direction.
- Stay connected to other believers who can provide encouragement and support.
- Identify areas of weakness or distraction in you, surrender them to God, and ask Him to renew your heart and mind.
- Reflect on previous battles and remember how God strengthened you before. Hold on to His faithfulness.
- Stay the course. Spiritual warfare is part of the faith journey. Don’t let the enemy discourage you from your calling and remember that God equips you and is with you in every battle.
